Case Law Library
The key § 1983 cases explained in plain language — what happened, what the court decided, and how to use each case in your own litigation.
How to use these filters
Cases are tagged five ways to help you find what's relevant:
- State — where the case is binding precedent. Federal circuit court decisions apply to every state in that circuit, not just the state where the case was filed. U.S. Supreme Court decisions apply everywhere.
- What the police did — the specific behavior (tackled, tased, arrested for filming, lied in report, etc.)
- What happened in court — whether the officer got immunity or was held accountable (qualified immunity defeated, plaintiff won, case dismissed, etc.)
- What kind of case — broader categories like suing the city, landmark decisions, or how courts evaluate complaints
- Legal basis — the constitutional amendment or legal doctrine at issue (Fourth Amendment, due process, etc.)
Click tags below to filter — you can select more than one to narrow results. For example, click "Texas" and "qi-defeated" to find Texas cases where qualified immunity was defeated. Click a tag again to remove it. Click "All" to reset.
Want to see how hard it is to win pro se? Try filtering by plaintiff won + pro se. The silence speaks for itself.
